Networking in 0.9?

What's the state of networking in 0.9?

Should I bother switching yet, if I'm writing a console app that only needs the networking, or should I stick with 0.8 for now?

As far as I know (which is very limited these days), the socket code in 0.9 is supposedly better than in 0.8. But there is no higher level network code yet.
