    What does this error mean?

    [driAllocateTexture:636] unable to allocate texture

    I'm using ClanLib 0.8.1 on Ubuntu Linux 8.04

    It doesn't seem like a message from ClanLib. Maybe you're running out of GPU memory?

    Yeah, it sounds like you are running out of GPU memory.

    The driAllocateTexture function, allocates memory from a texture heap to hold a texture object.

    Try reducing the size of the largest textures

    Check the BIOS, it may be possible to increase the GPU RAM, if it shares the system RAM.
    You may need to look at xorg.conf memory settings as well.

    I once tried allocating more textures than could fit in the GPU memory, and there was no problem doing so (ATi mobility radeon x800 on win xp). I'd assume the GPU texture memory is a cache - the most recently used textures stay there, and the rest are away in system memory if they haven't been used recently and can't fit in the GPU memory. Maybe somebody knows how this actually works?

    I think the error could also mean you try to create a texture larger (or smaller due to some bug) than your graphics card supports, or then in some bit depth or with some features your setup doesn't support.

    On older ATi cards the max texture size is 2048x2048, while on nVidia it's mostly 8Kx8K or 4kx4k for older models. ClanLib should check that the texture size is sane and that the bit depth is supported before creating one. If it does so in CL 0.8, I have no idea.
