Default GUIDE - Making a quality (Growtopia) video

    Hello all,

Lots of questions are asked on the forums about recording videos, how to edit etc.
So, I decided to make a guide on it, since I might be more experienced with that then the average player.

    Step 1 - Choosing a platform

There are several platforms to record on, and they all have positive and negative sides.

    PC/Mac
    - A lot of software available
    - Easy to record on
    - Also the ability to edit your footage immediately

    iOS/Android
    - Not much software available
    - You need to transfer your footage to a computer first to edit it

So, it's best to go with a PC/Mac to record on. If you do not have a fast computer, you can consider recording on your iOS/Android device, but you're going to have to use unsupported ways to record. I will not zoom in on that aspect.

Step 2 - Choosing recording software
For recording software; there isn't really a good free option, you'll always have to pay to get good quality. Mostly, free trials of an application will put a watermark in your recorded videos.

    PC:
    - Fraps, it's the most-used recording software out there. Free trial, full version is paid. ($)

    Mac:
    - QuickTime has a built in recording feature. (File > New screen recording) (Free)
    - ScreenFlow, the best one around. It's easy to use, and has a built in editing feature. ($$)

There is a lot more recording software out there, I chose to list the best ones.

Step 3 - Choosing editing software

There is a lot of good editing software available, I will cover every platform, and what the options are.

    PC:
    - Sony Vegas Pro, it's one of the most-used editing programs out there, also one of the best ($$)
    - Adobe Premiere Pro, it's like... the best around. You can see that in the price though. ($$$)
    - Windows movie maker, well, if you do not have any money, you could try using this, but you won't deliver real quality videos. (Free)
    - EzVid, if you're looking for a movie maker alternative, this is free and I heard that it's way better than movie maker. (Free)

    Mac:
    - iMovie, it's very easy to use, and also not that expensive. ($)
    - Final Cut Pro X, I actually use it myself and I must say, it's impressive. If you're used to iMovie, it's easy to use Final Cut Pro. It has an easy UI, but can deliver high quality videos. Also, definitely go with version 10+, 9 has a crappy UI. ($$$)
    - Adobe Premiere Pro, yeah, well this is the best of the best. I don't use it myself, but it's really worth every penny of the price. ($$$)

    iOS/Android:
    - I definitely do not recommend editing videos on your mobile device, though if you do not have any other option, go with iMovie on your iOS device. I do not know about android, I don't have one. Sorry.

Step 4 - Choosing a subject for your video

While choosing a subject for your video, there are two ways to go:

    - Gameplay video
For this, you basically record yourself playing the game. Make sure you do make it interesting, for example do not add farming in your video, because that can be very boring. If you are going to, at least speed it up.

    - Machinima video
This is a little hard to explain. A machinima can be anything, except for gameplay. For example: an adventure, a music video, anything like that.

    Step 5 - Editing!

Yey! Editing! At least, I like this a lot. Editing is where you put everything together to form the end product. While editing, you must make sure you do this:
    - Cut. Cut. Cut. This is basically what the whole video is based on. Cut out the boring parts, the parts that you don't like, cut so that your video looks smoother.
    - Definitely do NOT use too much transitions. Especially not over-exaggerated ones. Your final product won't look really smooth, and amateurish.
    - If you're recording voice audio, make sure it's synced with the video... Seems easy, but many forget this. And it just doesn't look cool.
    - Make sure to export your video in the HIGHEST quality your computer is capable of. Viewers love HD videos.

    Step 6 - Uploading

Now, for uploading your video, the most-used platform is YouTube (duhh!). Make sure your channel name fits your videos. Make sure to add enough tags, so people can find your video. If you want more views, post the video on the forums, or put it in your signature.

Now, this guide has reached its end. I hope you learned something, and keep up the good work!

This guide is really good! I personally use Fraps to record and Sony Vegas to edit.

    Great guide!
This'll help people now since everyone wants that Growie...

But, doesn't Fraps leave some kind of watermark or something?
Dunno, but I use aTube Catcher (recommended by Nobelrulz, thanks :P), it's free and has no watermarks or anything.

    Just one question...
When using Windows Movie Maker, and when saving your project as a movie in high quality, is it normal for it to take hours (for a 10 minute movie) and for the pc to be really really laggy?

    Thanks for your feedback.
I'll add in that free trials of recording software will most-likely leave a watermark. Also I'll add links to the websites of the applications.

I don't know about movie maker, I don't use windows... The only thing I can tell is that it's unstable, crappy software. It might've been good 5 years ago, but now you can get a lot better free alternatives.

I think you misunderstood the subject of this thread; it's not about me making a video, it's about how to make a video

Well yes there are some "alternative" ways to get software, but I chose to not list those, because it's not officially supported.

Dunno, I'm doing perfectly fine with Windows Movie Maker.
And, it's rated as the best free video editing software... here

    It's really simple to use.
