No reason I can see; others are getting on fine. Can you be more specific as to what is happening?

Have a look at the logs, maybe they will give you a clue. The address is posted on the logon screen.

Well since you have had your sever running I have been kick off !!! The new game you have I log on with Evil Eve and the next day only I was kick... You don't need to know anythig eles...Look at the logs.. Why would you post the players talking to one another... Thats just not right...As a host you should be more worrie about what is wrong or how can you make this game better..Not posting what they are saying to one another...

Hmmm, well I am certainly not doing anything to intentionally kick you off. I am not sure what you mean when you say you logged on with Evil Eve. Are you sharing the same computer? I have the security feature that allows only one IP address per player per day turned on. If you are using Daytona as your player name I don't even see it listed in the logs. That is why I asked for more specifics.

The reason the logs were posted last month was because the player in the top spot was cheating. Rather than ban him, I made his tricks visable to all. He was giving himself gold on a daily basis and it was obvious if you looked at the logs. I have since disabled /give as a result to keep that from happening again.

In another post on this forum I suggested that future versions of Funeral Quest might disclose /gives and multiple account creation attempts in the Daily News, and Seth seems to like the idea. That would be less draconian than publishing the logs and still shine some light on those that just can't play fair.

Unfortunately, the only way to expose what was going on last month was to show the unedited logs. My intent was not to make any converstations public. Still, it isn't a bad thing for people to be aware that what they say in the Cafe isn't really a private conversation. The admin can always see it, (and if they have the server voice enabled, hear it).

I really don't have any desire to spend my time policing the game. I can't really even understand what kind of satisfaction that guy got out playing if he had to resort to unfair tactics. It's all about having fun, isn't it?

PS. Just to make it clear, I am not saying you were the player who was cheating. And, like I said, I didn't even kick him when I discovered it.

Well.. I think you are so wrong in posting the logs...Some things are not to be seen to others... Yes I have been kick every time your server starts over.. No Evil Eve does not use my computer.. She lives over 10 hours overseas from me.. So now what?

08-18-2005, 09:39 PM
Well, in that case I'm afraid I don't have a clue. Maybe somebody else has an idea?

As a long time user of FQ and a former admin of an FQ server, I'd like to gently remind you, Daytona, that no there is no right to privacy, expressed or implied, for users on an FQ server. Users pay exactly nothing to use a service but the admin does pay real money for bandwidth and licensing fees.

FQ's chat system was never intented to be a secure, private channel for player communication. The content from every chat session in the cafe is logged.

If this surprises you, think about the case were one user becomes violently abusive to another. The logs allow the admin to see this, take action and have an audit trail for extreme cases where the law becomes involved.

If you want privacy, use PGP encrypted email. That's a bit safer. I wouldn't even suggest using AOL IM, because you never know who at AOL listening in. Unencrypted email's contents are not logged by most email servers, but can be read by a third party while the message is being delivered (*cough* carnivore (http://www.epic.org/privacy/carnivore/) *cough*).

Admins have the right and the responsibilty to keep their server as free from abuse as possible. If posting the logs helps to unmask cheaters, the better off the game is. If some users use FQ for flirting and are embaressed by the publication of these sweet nothings, they might consider not doing that on FQ in the future (or at least toning down the graphic elements of their banter).

If you don't like the policy of the FQ server, leave. You're absolutely within your rights to do so and that sends a strong message to the admin. Or better, set up your own server and directly support Seth's efforts to improve the FQ game.

I have been running a server for sometime now... Maybe if you look you will see it.. It's call "intothesouth"..... yes i pay some for the license.. But I also give money out to players..But I don't have them go to any web site..Or try to have them give money to keep this game going..I do it for the players ... I like to see them have fun.. AND i do think it up to the Admin to check on if someone is cheating..The player will let you know IF YOU PUT UP AN ADMIN E-MAIL ADDRESS ..so they can send you stuff about the game.. ..Not to have to go to a web site to pot a message to the Admin... But John you are so right...One does not have to go to that server.. I have add a lot of new Event and Risk on my server.. Even a movie to see at the Casino! I have added new Weapons and some other things..I do remember you server as one of the best on here.. It's a shame you stop.... When that will be the last you will hear from me on this Posting the logs and being kick off of that server... I do wish them the best down the road!!

Thanks for pointing out the missing address. I was switching ISP's around the time I was setting up the server and completely forgot to add a new one later.
