I am a total newbie at this, of course I used to dial into BBS's and still do a few Telnet Servers, but what is the best way for a complete newbie to start his own service? Thanks!

Use Synchronet BBS software.
Its made for telnet nodes, and will virtualy run all the old door games, as well as newer door32 games.

If you plan on offering more than say 10 nodes and door games etc, i would suggest using at least windows2000 server
and a decent small server quality machine.

But you can always start up a small server first, and see if you can generate the interest, thats what i would do.

Go check out the sysop resources page at The BBS Corner (http://www.dmine.com/bbscorner/index.htm), there's a lot of good info there to help get you started. If anything seems confusing, or you get stuck you can always hop over to #bbs at irc.thebbs.org and ask someone for help. #synchronet is there as well, it's the official IRC help channel for Synchronet BBS software if that's the package you end up choosing. If you're running Windows you might also want to check out Renegade, it runs pretty much right out of the box, and along with Synch is still being developed. you can snag a copy at Titantic BBS (telnet://ttb.slyip.com)
