Consider using the v1.07 patch, it often helps. It is available at:

However, There is no title screen, and You start by editing the origenal game, contrary to a tutorial Ive used as reference.

To edit another game than the original one, you have to use DinkFrontEnd.exe, or use command line options.

Right, but what If I wanted to create a new dmod, not edit an existing one?

I suggest you read tut1.txt in your develop directory. You can then download a skeleton DMod at the Dink Network (where other tutorials are available). I suggest you read tut1.txt anyway to have a good grasp of what you are doing.
