Here's the question.

I wanna buy a shirt that is \$97 so I borrow \$50 from my sister and \$50 from my brother.When I bought it the cashier gave me \$3 as balance.When I arrived at home I gave my sister \$1 and my brother \$1 from the \$3 I have and the \$1 I hold.So my debt to my brother is \$49 and my sister is \$49.But if \$49 + \$49 = \$98 plus the \$1 at my hand = \$99. \$100 - \$99 = 1\$.Where is the \$1?

Stuck at this question for 2 hours ._. ples help meh!

Just split the dollar, give them both 50 cents, you have the dollar at hand so I don't know why you're asking where it is.

Nah. I just try to observe the question carefully when it comes to questions like that. or was that sarcasm? :(

That doesn't make sense, though. The question said "from the \$3 dollars I have and the \$1 dollar I hold". The word "and" makes a big difference there, because it implies that you had \$4 dollars overall. It's either that or it was just a grammatical mistake.

The other answer I have is that there is no missing \$1. Instead, there is a remaining \$1. You shouldn't add \$1 to \$98, because \$98 is the total price of money you currently owe. Remember that you already paid both of them \$1 each (or \$2 overall), so that's why it's \$98.

The remaining \$1 will be given to one of them. Now that you gave one of them \$1, then that means you already gave \$3 to them overall. So now, you owe one of them \$48 and you owe the other \$49. \$48 + \$49 = \$97. The missing \$3 is the change you got from buying the shirt and was the one you used to pay them.

I hope that made sense. If you still don't get it, then I'm willing to write a clearer explanation on a paper. lol

Finally solved the question in more than an hour ;-;. I enjoyed solving it, though. I like it when math questions turns my brain into mush.

Shirt=97\$
Sister's money =50\$
Brother's money =50\$

You buy the shirt with the money you lent from your brother and sister.
97\$-100\$=3\$
You owe your sister 50\$ and you pay her 3\$
Now sister's money =3\$
Brother's money =0\$

You still need to pay back your sister 47\$ and your brother 50\$
47\$+50\$=97\$

That's what you still need to pay.

It isn't (50-3:3)x2+1=99 as you did. You probably thought it'd be 100, but when you did (50-3:3) one dollar got lost since that part was to calculate how much your sister or brother owed you individually. (50-1)x2=49x2=98
98 is how much more you owe if you wouldn't pay the 1\$ more.

It is (50-3:2)x2=97 or (50-3:3)x2-1=97

All you need to know is that just as PolarisHD said, the question is wrong. It was slyly created to mess with your brain. Remember, you can't add debt with assets together just like that. The right way to deal with the question is this:

In the start you had: \$0

In my hand: \$1
With my sister: \$1
With my brother: \$1
With the cashier: \$97, because that's what you paid for.
Total: \$100

What I borrowed from my brother: \$50
What I borrowed from my sister: \$50
Total amount borrowed: \$100

Since what you give counters what you borrow, they cancel each other out.
\$100 - \$100 = \$0

And \$0 is what you had in the start.

You borrowed \$100 but you only spent \$97. So technically your siblings gave you \$48.50 each for the shirt PLUS \$3. But you paid them back \$1 each. Add \$1 to the amount of used [\$48.50] which then equals \$49.50. Times it by two because you got 2 siblings and that's \$99. Then you got the dollar in your hand = \$100.

EDIT: Didn't even answer your question lol, but I think I solved the problem. Now all you got to do is make up something that fits that ^^

I crumpled the paper I did my math on. Good thing I didn't throw it on the trash yet. Also, I can assure you that you won't understand a thing since It's just a scratch paper. It doesn't even show how I got the answer lol. But if you still insist, then here:

You don't have WLS so you borrowed 50 WLS from your sister and another 50 WLS from your brother.

Now, you currently have 100 WLS.

You paid 100 WLS for the shirt and got 3 WLS as a change, since the shirt costs 97 WLS.

Now, you currently have 3 WLS.

You gave your sister 1 WL and gave your brother 1 WL as well.

Now, you currently have 1 WL.

You owe each of them 49 WLS now. 49 + 49 = 98. The total amount of WLS you need to pay is 98 WLS. You shouldn't add the remaining WL you have, because the missing 2 WLS from 98 WLS is the WLS you gave to your brother and sister.

What do we do with the remaining WL? You give it to either one of them. It doesn't really matter who.

Let's say you gave the remaining WL to your sister. Remember that you owe her 49 WLS, right? Since you gave her the remaining WL, the total amount of WLS you owe her would be 48 WLS.

Now, you currently have 0 WLS.

You currently owe your sister 48 WLS and you still owe your brother 49 WLS. 48 + 49 = 97. The total amount of WLS you owe them now is 97 WLS. The missing 3 WLS is the change you got from the cashier. You gave your sister 2 WLS and gave your brother 1 WL, which in total, is 3 WLS.
